Determinants of Illegal Behavior in a Military Environment

Abstract

Abstract. In the context of modern challenges facing the defense and security sector of Ukraine, the need for a comprehensive analysis of the determinants affecting illegal behavior in the military environment is becoming urgent. The study of socio-psychological factors that contribute to the deviant behavior of military personnel creates a basis for improving approaches to the prevention of such offenses and contributes to ensuring a high level of discipline and compliance with the law in military formations. The purpose of this study was to study the main determinants affecting the illegal activity of military personnel and to determine the patterns of influence of situational and systemic factors on its manifestations. Achieving this goal required a comprehensive analysis of existing theoretical concepts and, based on them, the development of priority ways aimed at increasing the effectiveness of the prevention of illegal activities, as well as strengthening discipline and legality in the military environment. The methodological basis of the study is the method of meta-analysis, which made it possible to quantitatively summarize the results of previous scientific works and assess the scale and degree of influence of situational and systemic factors on the illegal activities of military personnel. In the process of research, the most significant social variables determining the nature of illegal activity in the military environment were singled out. The results of the analysis showed a stable trend, which confirms the dominant role of the social context in the formation of illegal behavior. The key determinants included such features as the conservatism of the military sphere, its monocratic nature, group pressure, as well as collective identity, which limits opportunities for self-identification. The specified factors are strengthened by the influence of situational and systemic factors, creating prerequisites for the emergence of illegal behavior. The conclusions of the study emphasize the need for socio-political reforms aimed at minimizing the impact of these factors, with an emphasis on the development of civil society as a key condition for ensuring positive changes in the military sphere.
