Value-Motivational Determinants of Academic Success of Future Psychologists
Abstract
Abstract. The article examines the problem of identifying value-motivational determinants that directly influence the level of academic success among psychology students. The relevance of the research is driven by the need to improve the quality of professional training for future specialists amidst the transformation of higher education and increasing demands for psychological competence. The author conducts a theoretical analysis of the relationship between intrinsic motivation, the system of value orientations, and educational performance. It is established that academic success is not merely a product of intellectual abilities but is significantly determined by the structure of the individual's motivational sphere. Specifically, the role of cognitive motives, the drive for self-actualization, and professional development as leading factors in effective knowledge acquisition are investigated. The paper presents the results of an empirical study conducted among students across various academic years. Correlation links were identified between the predominance of terminal values (such as professional fulfillment, personal growth, creativity) and high academic performance indicators. It is proven that students with a strong orientation toward the content of their future profession demonstrate a higher level of autonomy and responsibility in the learning process. Conversely, the dominance of extrinsic (external) motives, related solely to obtaining a diploma or social approval, often correlates with a superficial approach to learning and lower grades. The practical significance of the findings lies in the possibility of using them to develop psychological support programs for students. These programs should aim at stimulating intrinsic motivation and adjusting the value hierarchy, which will contribute not only to increased academic success but also to the formation of the professional identity of future psychologists.
